NCISAA Policy Explanation on combination of 1A/2A Girls race, and on the status of the 2005 1A Boys & 1A Girls races: For 2004 the 1A/2A girls will be scored as one championship. By NCISAA rules, eight full teams are required to have a separate championship. A minimum of five athletes is required to participate as a team. While there are ten 1A schools entering athletes in the girls division, the 1A girls had only seven "teams" entered, and so could not qualify for a separate championship. The other three 1A schools had fewer than five athletes entered, and those athletes will compete as individuals (not as scoring teams). The 1A boys also did not have eight "teams" this year, but, because they conducted a separate 1A Boys championship last year, they were granted a one-year grace period this year by the NCISAA to hold a separate championship. The 1A Boys will be combined with the 2A boys in 2005 if they do not have eight full teams next year. As a side note, the 1A girls were very close this year, as were the 1A boys, both with seven "teams" entered. We hope that both the 1A girls and 1A boys will be able to field the required eight teams next year in order to hold separate championships for their divisions. Below are the corresponding rules from the NCISAA Handbook:
1. Before the NCISAA will conduct a state play-off, eight member schools must register intent to play in the tournament. The 40% PLUS rule determines the number of teams in a state tournament. When the number of teams fielded in a particular sport in a particular classification exceeds 40% of the total number of schools shown for that classification, the tournament will advance to the next level (i.e., an 8 team tournament will advance to 12 teams, and a 12 team tournament will advance to 16).
2. If, on two consecutive years, fewer than eight teams appear at any NCISAA event, that event will be dropped from the play off calendar until sufficient interest can be demonstrated to reinstate.
