Opponent: North Raleigh Christian Academy
Final Score: North Raleigh Christian 29 - Cary Academy
17
The first
round of the Triangle Middle School Conference playoffs
produced no magic for Cary Academy as a combined Gold and
White team could not muster enough offense and fell to North
Raleigh Christian Academy by a score of 29 to 17. It
was the third time this season that the Chargers played
North Raleigh Christian, with both the Gold (21-18) and
White (30-20) teams falling. After getting off to a
quick 4-0 start in the first 2 minutes of the contest, the
Chargers could not get anything to drop and only scored
another 6 points the rest of the half where they found
themselves trailing 14-8. Over-aggressive defense
produced too many fouls and allowed the Knights to score
close to half of their total points from the foul line.
Cannon Duke did his best to keep CA in the contest scoring
8, but it wasn't enough as the final horn sounded on the
game and the season.

Opponent: Ravenscroft
Final Score: Ravenscroft 49 - Cary Academy 16
The White Team
was overwhelmed with size, strength, and quickness as they
fell to Ravenscroft 49-16 in their final game of the season.
From the outset Ravenscroft set the tone by going to their
bigger men inside where they were able to make the most of
their opportunities. The Chargers also had few answers
to the Ravens' outside game where three-pointers came from
all areas of the court. For the White Team, it was a
sobering end to a season that saw them win their first two
games. On the positive side, Chris Martin got on the
board for the first time this season while John Scott led
his team in scoring with 7.

Opponent: Cary Christian School
Final Score: Cary Academy 25 - Cary Christian 22
On their
eighth and final try, the Gold Team scrapped and clawed its
way to its first win of the season, a 25 - 22 triumph over
Cary Christian. In a game that was closely contested
in the first half, the Chargers asserted themselves on
offense in the third quarter outscoring their opponents 10-3
and pulled ahead by 7 points (20-13) going into the final
frame. Good ball movement and better work off the
glass made the difference as CA was able to withstand a
full-court press that had them flustered earlier in the
game. Cannon Duke once again showcased his inside game
scoring a season-high 13 points while Charles Moore, Joseph
Parrish, and Josh Kennedy each contributed 4.

Opponent: North Raleigh Christian Academy
Final Score: North Raleigh Christian 21 - Cary Academy
18
The Boys
Middle School Gold Team lost their final home game of the
year 21 - 18. After a lackluster first 12 minutes that
had CA trailing at half by 7, the Chargers turned up the
heat in the second half and got within two points on a
couple of occasions. But they could never even the
score and a last second 3-pointer to tie the game missed the
mark. Cannon Duke, who threw in a 3-pointer from 35
feet as the third quarter ended, led his team in scoring
with 7. The Gold Team plays its final game on the road
at Cary Christian on Thursday, 2/7.

Opponent: Neuse Baptist Christian Academy
Final Score: Neuse Baptist 25 - Cary Academy 21
It was a game
that could have gone either way, but in the end, the White
Team did not make the key plays in a 25 - 21 home loss to
Neuse Baptist. The Chargers found themselves down 3 at
the half but scored the first 8 points in the second half to
lead by 5. Pressure defense led by Connor Dunleavy led
the charge. But CA could not contain Neuse Baptist who
rallied for 16 fourth quarter points to seal the game.
The White Team had a balanced offense with Connor Dunleavy
scoring 6 points, while Neal Patel and Zac Wilson had 4.
The White Team has one game remaining - a road game on 2/8
vs. Ravenscroft.

Opponent: Trinity Academy of Raleigh
Final Score: Trinity Academy 33 - Cary Academy 6
The Boys White
Team ran into a buzz saw when they played Trinity Academy of
Raleigh at the Lake Lynn Community Center. Similar to
what the Gold Team experienced a day earlier against
Ravenscroft, the White Team was never in the game as they
could not overcome a major size disadvantage. The Chargers
were down early and had no answer to the zone press and zone
defense applied by Trinity. The 6 point total was by
far the lowest output so far this season. The
White Team will look to regroup when they play at home
against Neuse Baptist on Thursday, the 31st.

Opponent: Ravenscroft
Final Score: Ravenscroft 51 - Cary Academy 14
As the
Ravenscroft coach said after the game, "You guys just
couldn't get any of your shots to drop." That was only
a small part of the story for the Gold Team in their most
lopsided loss so far this season. A very balanced
Ravenscroft offense coupled with strong rebounding and an
effective fast break made the outcome a mere formality as
the Ravens totally dominated from start to finish. The
Chargers were unable to keep their opponents off the boards
on both ends of the floor and second, third and fourth shots
on the offensive end were too much for CA to handle. A
humbling lesson on what size, speed and experience will do.
Next up for the Gold Team: a home game against North
Raleigh Christian on February 5th.

Opponent: Bethesda Christian Academy
Final Score: Bethesda Christian 50 -
Cary Academy 25
The Boys Gold
team travelled to Bethesda Christian Academy hoping to post
their first win of the season, but it was not meant to be.
The Chargers came out of the gate flying all over the
court, and took an early 6 - 4 lead with their pressing
defense led by Josh Kennedy, David Maydew and Joseph
Parrish. But eventually their opponents' experience
and size advantage took its toll as CA found itself down at
the half 23 - 14. Although the spirited effort
continued in the third quarter, the Chargers were unable to
close the gap and trailed by eleven, 34 - 23 at the end of
the period. Joseph Parish and Canon Duke tied for
scoring honors with 7.

Opponent: North Raleigh Christian Academy
Final Score: North Raleigh Christian 30 - Cary Academy
20
After a
sluggish first half, the Boys White team stepped up the
intensity in the second half, but it wasn't enough as they
fell to North Raleigh Christian 30 - 20. Cary Academy
was unable to hit from the outside and the Knight's zone
defense was able to pack the middle and deny the Chargers
any close-in shots or second chances. On the defensive
end, Cary Academy was able to limit North Raleigh Christian
to only a handful of outside shots, but they could not keep
their opponents off the offensive boards. Adit Namdev
played agressively on both ends of the floor and led the
Chargers in scoring with a season high 14.

Opponent: Neuse Baptist Christian School
Neuse Baptist Christian 42 - Cary Academy 31
The Boys Gold
team played Neuse Baptist tough for 3 quarters.
Unfortunately, one bad quarter was enough to do them in.
Only down 10 - 8 after the first frame, the Chargers lost
their edge in the 2nd quarter and found themselves behind 21
- 11 at half. For the balance of the game, it was back
and forth with neither team having a decided edge, but CA
could not close the gap enough to make it a game.
Canon Duke had the Chargers' highest point total this season
scoring 14 while Josh Kennedy excelled on both ends of the
floor forcing turnovers on defense and scoring a personal
high 10 points on offense.

Opponent: Bethesda Christian Academy
Bethesda Christian 27 - Cary Academy 14
In what
turned out to be one of the more disappointing games so far
this season, the White team dropped its second in a row to
even its season record to 2 - 2. After a lackluster
start which saw the Chargers fall behind 6 - 0 early in the
game, the team was only able to muster 2 points in the first
half and trailed by 11. Things did not get much better
in the second half as Bethesda built a comfortable lead and
coasted the rest of the way. More intensity and better
focus will be needed to get things back on track - and
hopefully that will happen when the White team plays its
next game at North Raleigh Christian Academy on the 22nd.

CA vs. Durham
Academy 13 - 31
The Boys Middle
School White Team suffered its first lost of the season with
a 31 - 13 home loss to a more seasoned Durham Academy squad.
Durham Academy's coach applauded the efforts of the Charger
team by commenting on their intensity and never-say-die
attitude. But in the end, CA had very few answers to
the zone defense and offensive firepower of the Cavaliers.
John Scott took scoring honors again for the Chargers with 4
baskets for a total of 8 points.

CA vs.
Trinity
Academy of Raleigh 15 - 38
Out-manned, out-sized, but not out-hustled - in a nutshell,
that is a review of the Gold team's 38 -15 home loss
to Trinity Academy. Right from the outset it was clear
that this would be the toughest game so far this season -
but the Chargers stayed with it from beginning to end.
Canon Duke led the team in scoring with 5 points while
Charles Moore (4 points), Ian Henry and Michael Averell scored
their first points of the season.

CA vs.Cary
Christian 16 - 14
The Boys White
Middle School White team made it 2 - 0 with a 16 - 14 home
win against Cary Christian.
After jumping
out to an early 7 - 2 first quarter lead, the Chargers were
stuck in neutral for the next two frames. Thanks to a
pressing defense led by John Scott, CA limited their
opponents' scoring chances from start to finish. In spite
of a somewhat lackluster offense, the Chargers were able to
hold on for the win.
John Scott led
his team in scoring with 4 baskets while Adit Namdev hit a
clutch basket late to help seal the win.

December 10 @
Triangle Day
24 - 23
The Boys Middle
School White team's first game of the season was exciting
from start to finish, with many twists and turns throughout.
After scoring the first six points of the game in the first
90 seconds, the Chargers found themselves down 15 - 8 at the
half. Pressure defense, led by John Scott, and an
upbeat tempo made all the difference in the 3rd quarter as
CA outscored their opponents 10 - 2 in that frame to take an
18 - 17 lead going into the final quarter. After going
down 23 - 20, the Chargers scored the game's final 4 points,
with leading scorer Zach Wilson hitting a clutch 15-footer
with 40 seconds left in the game. John
Scott, Adit
Namdev, and Ben Shpurker were tied for runner-up scoring
honors as CA barely held on for a 24 - 23 win.

December 7 @
Durham Academy
14 - 26
The Boys Middle
School Gold team kicked off the '07 - '08 season on the road
at Durham Academy. Although being outsized, the
Charger team showed great hustle and intensity from start to
finish.
Joseph Parrish
hit the first Charger bucket and free throw of the season
while Cannon Duke led the team in scoring. With Josh
Kennedy and David Maydew keeping up the defensive pressure,
the Chargers hung around for most of the contest before
falling 26 - 14. All in all, a good first game for a
team that will get better as they have time to gel.
