Sara Knowlton is engaged.

Cyrus Atkins - Hello fellow alumni. I've just finished my third year at UNC-Asheville and am now living back in Raleigh for the summer. I'm majoring in creative writing while at the same time aspiring to musical adequacy. Pool quickly becoming another passion. This summer, I hope to heal the disappointment stemming from a botched attempt at driving cross country with a productive stab at bartending school. Hopefully this will afford me a rewarding summer job far from the mired pit of retail. Hopefully I'll get to catch up with some of you as well.

Alison Parks will be a pledgemom for her sorority Sigma Alpha Omega this fall.

Class of 2003

Peter Cvelich will study in Montpellier, France during the upcoming year.

Entrepreneurs Alex Leet and Alex Gonski opened Triangle Student Painters, a painting company, last year and continue to sharpen their business skills handling everything from estimating jobs to hiring and accounting.

Also studying abroad this year will be Casey Samulski, who will be in Tokyo, Japan at Temple University’s Japan campus.

Gray Still will travel to Australia for four weeks of study in January, ’06.

Kaleah Overton - Right now I am in Atlanta, GA finishing out my internship with my chemistry professor as a research assistant and getting ready for my third season on the volleyball team.  And believe it or not, I still don't, I am officially a chemistry major. Anyhoo congrats to all the recent grads and have a wonderful summer.

Class of 2004

Alex DiLeonardo has started his own web development business, DiLeonardo Web Development. He’s currently creating a website for the UNC private dorm Granville Towers.

This summer Zack Hobbs worked with other volunteers for Appalachia Service Project in Kentucky providing home repairs to those in need.

Heather Wiles - After the first semester at the University of Wales Swansea didn't work out as I had hoped, I turned the rest of the year into a gap year. From Jan-Apr I worked as an archivist in a CRO before traveling as a volunteer for two months in South Africa. The first month was spent not far from Cape Town and the second month was near Johannesburg volunteering at the Lion Park - both were absolutely incredible experiences. I am currently in Rambouillet, France for a month in a language immersion program and will start at Bryn Mawr College this fall.

Class of 2005

Amanda Fritz was crowned Miss North Carolina Teen 2005 this summer.

Although a major in music and pre-med coursework at UNC will keep Danni Simon busy, she’ll also be on the track team competing in the high jump.

Spring 2004

Current News from Cary Academy Alumni:

Laura Johnson ('00) - will graduate in June from Princeton. After graduation, she’ll participate in the six-week American Dance Festival at Duke University, then begin a year-long internship as a clinical researcher at the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center in San Francisco.  After that, she plans to either return to Argentina for a year (where she studied for a semester) or enter medical school. This year Laura was the co-recipient of the Koren Prize for "outstanding departmental work during the junior year" in the History Department (she’s a History of Science major). She sends her best to all the other CA alums!

Rebecca Jacobs ('00) - For the past few years I have been working on a screenplay entitled No Regrets. There was a live reading of the screenplay in April 2004 in the Studio Theatre at Meredith College. All of the proceeds went to The American Cancer Society. In a nutshell, No Regrets is about trials and tribulations of the young soul. It is R rated due to language.

Uzma Rawn ('02) - is enjoying Ithaca College and her studies in her major of Sports Management. Through a program coordinated by the college she'll leave in July for a six-month Walk About Program in Australia, traveling and studying at three different universities.

Lauren Jackson ('00) - I have been very busy these past few years of school.  I am currently working as a research assistant at Duke Medical Center in the Radiation Oncology Department studying tumor metastasis in laboratory animals. I began working in research last year, working in a lab studying the biochemical pathway leading to TNF-a induced apoptosis. This winter I will be traveling to Africa to shadow doctors and volunteer in health clinics while working on my senior honors thesis. Next May, I will graduate from the honors program at NC State University with a B.S. in Microbiology. While at the University of Georgia, I participated in several campus organizations and was one of two students at UGA chosen to participate in a week long conference in Washington, D.C. given by several prominent leaders in media journalism and past presidental cabinet members, including William Safire, Edwin Meese, and others. Last May, I worked as a certified nursing assistant at Wake Med which solidified my commitment to the medical profession. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in surgical oncology. .However, I have been offered a research fellowship in Sweden to obtain my PhD following graduation and have not yet decided whether to pursue my PhD overseas before starting med school or to enter a dual degree program here in the U.S. I have continued to pursue my love of art and have had my artwork featured in an exhibition at an art gallery in downtown Raleigh.

Deidre Simon ('02) -  I’m still at VCU and lovin it.  Finished my first (and last) year as a member of the women’s track and field team (T-Fi!!).  I like to say that I quit running because of ‘irreconcilable differences’ with my quote/unquote “sprint coach,” but that is something to be left undiscussed.  Moving along through the Art Foundation program, getting ready to send off a portfolio for an opportunity to be one of the “40/40 Club” of the Fashion Design majors.  YEAH!!

Andi Altmeyer (’01) is on the Davidson College basketball team as a walk on.  Thus far he has played in two games and has recorded 1 official assist.

Todd Metter ('00) - Currently I am a junior at Middlebury College, Vermont.  I am studying abroad all this year at Universidad de la Rioja, Spain, which is in Logroño, Spain, north-central part (autonomous community of La Rioja).  I´m having a very good time and it is really improving my Spanish, which is the point since I am abroad to fulfill my Spanish major.  I also have majors in History and Political Science, which keeps me pretty busy, although the Poli Sci might get dropped to a minor, who knows.  I hope to travel around Europe some over the course of this year (the school term here does not end until mid July), perhaps over Christmas and spring breaks.  We´ve already visited many Spanish cities and had a really great time.  I still keep in touch with the family with which I stayed when I visited Spain on my Cary Academy trip; it´s very nice to have a place to go and stay at every now and then.  My email address is tmetter@middlebury.edu and I would love to hear from anyone, student or alum or whomever, with what they´ve been up to or if they have any questions about Middlebury or about Spain!

Cary Academy’s alumni were busy with a wide variety of activities during the summer of 2002, as reflected on the alumni forms being returned to the Advancement Office:

Laura Johnson (’00) studied in Cuba for a month and then volunteered in a rural Costa Rican health clinic for six weeks.

Jenny King (’00) - Working as an assistant veterinary technician for two local vet hospitals kept her busy, but she also managed a visit to Disney World before classes at NCSU began again.

Duane Doster (’00) was recognized as an honor graduate from the U.S. Army Reserves in Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Lots of sun, some good times, and quite a bit of responsibility filled the summer for Craig Phillips (’02) who was a beach lifeguard at Myrtle Beach.  It sounds like the beach also called to Mia Lakey (’02) and Randy Moresi (’02) – they enjoyed a trip to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Linda Lin (’01) traveled back to Taiwan and then visited Japan.

Jeremy Freifeld (’02) split his summer with trips to Myrtle Beach, the North Carolina mountains, and Paris.

Always busy, Joe Reutter (’00) worked at a country club in Linville, NC, but managed to get away to attend some import and modified car shows throughout the Southeast. This past year Joe organized an import car club for students at Appalachian State.

There’s a rumor that at least one of the CA’00 alums is engaged: stay tuned!
