Golf Team Preview - 2002

As is the case in most sport teams at Cary Academy this calendar year, the golf team looks to build around its youth. Coming off a 2-win, 7-loss season last year, the Chargers are looking to improve their status in the TISAC Conference. This will not be an easy task, as the TISAC features the State level teams Ravenscroft, Durham Academy, and Cardinal Gibbons. The Chargers will be led this year by the lone senior on the team, Ryan Cotter, who was a consistent starter on last year’s team. Then the youth corps takes over!! A host of ninth and tenth graders, and the occasional middle school student, will test their ability to become a part of the future for the Cary Academy golf program. Consistent scorer and team stats leader last year, Eddie Rendleman (10th) will be expected to carry much of the load for the young Chargers. Other underclassmen that may be forced to grow up under the pressure of competitive play are 9th graders Charlie Winn, Bryce Poll, and 8th grader Cameron O’Connor.
The Charger’s schedule is built around regular conference play, as the team plays in 9-hole contests on a home-and-home basis with each member of the TISAC Conference. The Conference Champion is then selected at the end of the season in an 18-hole Tournament to be played at Prestonwood – the Chargers home course. Says new coach, Bill Coulthart, “I think the best that we can hope for is to build consistency and confidence in young players. If we win a match or two, that would be icing on the cake!
I do think that we will be a completely different team in May than we are in March!”
The Chargers open the season on March 5th with an 18-hole match against The O’Neal School in Pinehurst.
