The Man Who Wasn’t There is the most recent movie by the Cohen brothers that takes place in 1949 California. Once it is made clear that this film is one that attempts to impress the audience with its frequent sweeping plot changes, the plot becomes predictably unpredictable. When viewing The Man Who Wasn’t There, the most important thing is to go into the film without any expectations.

The outcome is a mesmerizing hour and a half of dreamlike images that
accent the discussion of surreal topics such as God’s presence in film,
evolution, the illusion of the passage of time, and the collective
unconscious. Director Richard Linklater feels that most films today don’t
have time for digression because of choppy plots; Waking Life is his
attempt at “a film of ideas.”
