Holmes Merritt,
a name that is recognized by a large expanse of people in many
different ways. Maybe best known as the fairly chilled out dude at
school, that southern guy with the belt buckle, to the wrestling team
(generally the smaller or new wrestlers) he is that psycho guy who
always tries to inflict pain. No matter how one knows him, he/she
cannot help but like him. Holmes is the kind of guy that can’t be
hated, but is hard sometimes to praise. Holmes does have a certain
pride in everything that he does, which is extremely visible during
wrestling. He has a good understanding of this sport and has a
solid sense of leadership. His dedication and apparent love of
the sport make him improve with quick results. His tough attitude has
no equal; “The day a member of another sports team competes with two
dislocated shoulders, their triceps and bicep tendons torn, or after
vomiting five times from exertion is the day that a person can talk to
any member of the wrestling team about dedication.”
Larkin Willis, a 5’9 senior, is set and ready to go for this
year’s basketball season. The
strongest power forward for our Cary Academy girls’ team has
improved her game a great deal since last year and works hard to lead
our girls to victory. Aggressive
on offense as well as on defense, Larkin is a penetrating force that
has proven to be unstoppable. Her
desire to work hard and her determination to win makes her an exciting
athlete to watch. Come
out and support Larkin, #54, as well as the other Lady Chargers, in
what promises to be a year marked by triumphs.
For the past three years I have
been on the swim team with Megann Vaughn.
Megann
always attends practice and she encourages people to keep going when
they are tired. During
meets she swims breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley.
She
is one of our best competitors and she is known on the team for her
ability to swim the difficult races without complaining.
Megann Vaughn is definitely a senior to watch during the
2000-2001 swimming season.
Since he came
here in 1999, Andi Altmeyer has been an essential part of the men’s
varsity basketball team. Andi left Germany to pursue his dream of
playing Division I basketball in college. Although he could have gone
back to Germany for twelfth grade, Andi decided to stay at Cary
Academy. He now holds the team’s record in the most free throws in a
game and the best free throw percentage of the season (76.86 %), and
was one of the starting guards practically every game. His
accomplishments also include receiving All-Conference last season.
With the talent and leadership #22 Andi contributes, the men’s
varsity basketball team can anticipate a successful season.
When his senior
year ends, Andi hopes to receive a scholarship to a university where
he would be able to play basketball and study either Psychology or
International Relations. If he does not continue school in America, he
will return to Germany to finish his thirteenth year of high school
and continue his education at the University in Frankfurt.
Evan Pike is a name everyone around campus knows (especially
the ladies). Possessing a
strong character and excelling in academics as well as athletics, he
shows leadership both as the captain of the Varsity Basketball Team
and a member of the Honor Society.
This leadership quality has shown in the past three basketball
seasons. His influence was particularly strong when the team went to the
State Tournament this past season.
Look
for him playing guard in upcoming games.
If you’re
ever in need of a smiling face or an encouraging word, I suggest you
look for a short girl with a big heart and a loud laugh. Avery
Atkinson, a Cary Academy senior, has been a source of ever-lasting
energy and fun for the three years that I have had the pleasure of knowing
her. Though I have been involved in other activities with her, I
have learned the most from Avery from being on
the Varsity Cheerleading Squad with her. Being a part of a
cheerleading squad means becoming extremely close to the members of
the team.
Through my years of cheering beside Avery, she never displayed any
semblance of pessimism or discouragement. On the contrary, she always
seemed to be the one making the squad laugh after bombing a routine or
lifting our spirits when we were struggling with our confidence. Avery is an incredible talent (have you heard the girl sing?),
and an incredible person who can always make a person feel good about
themselves.
