Dark Angel: The New Fox on Fox
Alex DiLeonardo

If people think that Jen from "Dawson's Creek" is a girl with attitude, than they obviously have not met Max  from Fox's brand new show "Dark Angel."  Actually, "Dark Angel" is not at all like "Dawson's Creek".  Instead, it is a futuristic action show that features a leather-wearing, motorcycle riding, kickboxing, genetically enhanced girl named Max.

Max is from the first batch of superhuman children made as a top-secret project in the 21st century by a section of the government called Manticore.  The government created these children to be used in wartime.  The children were created, trained, and raised in a prison-like facility on a secluded island in Washington State, secluded from the rest of the world.

One night, a group of children, including the then-young Max, became aware of their superhuman abilities and used them to attempt an escape.  The majority of the children failed, but several actually made it over the large barbed wire fences and to freedom.  Max was one of them.  The weekly television show that airs Tuesday nights at nine on Fox takes place roughly seventeen years after Max's escape.

The show takes place at a time when the United States is a third-world country.  Ninety percent of the population is homeless, and the government is a dictatorship.  Max gets her life together and gets a job, but then runs into Logan Cale (Michael Weatherly).  Logan is an outrageously wealthy citizen who is confined to a wheelchair as a result of a shoot-out.  He runs an underground news broadcast called "Eyes Only" which claims to be "the only free voice remaining."  After a long line of governmental research, he realizes who Max is, and what her abilities are.  She agrees to help him with his cyber-journalism if he helps her find her long lost brothers.  Throughout the series, Max and Logan act as a crime-fighting duo, trying to right the wrongs in society.

Max is also helped by her two friends, Cindy and Kendra, and an unlimited auxiliary of martial-arts moves, along with her feline DNA, which allows her to have night vision, superhuman strength, and incredible acrobatic skill.  The only drawback to Max's superhuman traits is her body's need for Tryptophan, which is a drug that most people make in their bodies and is helpful when trying to sleep.  Max must take pills to maintain the Tryptophan level in her body, and when they are not available, she begins to convulse and her stamina weakens.

Dark Angel is a great series for anybody who liked other works by James Cameron, the creator of Dark Angel.  Some examples of his projects are: The Terminator 1 and 2, True Lies, Aliens, and The Abyss, along with his "million dollar chick-flick", Titanic.  Watch Dark Angel every Tuesday night at nine on Fox and follow Max on her quest to find her family and discover her origin.
