The Cary Academy Upper School
Humanities teachers (English, History and World Arts) seek
to both challenge and nurture Upper School students in their
growth towards adult responsibility. Part of this
responsibility entails submitting work on time. The
Humanities teachers understand, however, that on occasion
students, as well as adults, may not meet all deadlines.
The following policy regarding late
work has been established with these responsibilities of
both students and teachers in mind:
· to work with students
in developing responsible habits for timely work submission;
· to emphasize the
importance of staying current with assignments and meeting
deadlines;
· to be fair to
students who do their work in a timely manner; and
· to provide sufficient
flexibility to both teachers and students.
a.
Extensions: If a student knows he/she will not be able
to complete an assignment on time, he/she needs to speak to
the teacher prior to the due date. Teachers may
grant extensions on a case-by-case basis.
b.
Homework: In most cases, homework that is not
submitted on time will not receive credit. However, in
special cases a teacher may allow a student to complete the
assignment for partial credit. If the assignment is not
submitted by the third day, the grade will become a zero.
c. Major
Assignments (essays, projects, et cetera): Major
assignments will be accepted but will be marked down 10% of
the final grade earned for each day they are late.
II.
Make-up work due to absences:
A student who
misses an assessment due to an excused absence is to talk to
the teacher on the day he/she returns to school to arrange a
date and time to make up that assessment as soon as
possible. Students are expected to make up all missed
work within the same number of school days they were absent.
Extended absences will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
