This course examines and encourages students to delve into the creative process.  BY comparing forms within the genres of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry, students will learn the techniques used in classical and contemporary writing.  These techniques will serve as building blocks for students to build upon creatively.  Additionally, students will gain experience with writing descriptive and analytical essays about short stories, poems and essays while polishing vocabulary and grammar skills.

LITERARY COMPREHENSION WRITING/MECHANICS STUDY SKILLS

Students will confront readings as writers. Students will understand that themes in a work of art are crafted by style as well as by content; that a good artist can evoke a theme in multiple ways; and that close attention to features of diction or structure will enhance their appreciation of art. 

 

Content knowledge pursued includes

  • Read the texts (visual and written) closely and critically in order to analyze carefully for meaning and theme

  • Develop original, valid analyses, arguments and conclusions about texts

  • Articulate arguments and conclusions effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Analysis of texts that demonstrates both accurate understanding and critical thinking.

Students will

  • pose appropriately complex and valid thesis statements

  • identify and apply advanced literary terms and devices

  • write accurately and clearly, with confidence, rich detail and originality of insight, ultimately developing one’s own style in both analytical and creative writing

  • identify and correct grammar errors.

Students will

  • pose appropriate questions to better understand an assignment. 

  • demonstrate effective and productive time-management, organization of resources, note-taking skills, and independent preparation.

SPEAKING AND LISTENING TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH

The students will

  • Pay respectful attention to teachers, to peers, and to the opinions of others.

  • Confidently articulate opinions during presentations and debates.

  • Ask analytical, generative, and evaluative questions that promote an authentic dialogue in class discussions.

  • Participate meaningfully in class discussions and activities.

  • Discuss each reading.

  • Offer constructive, well thought-out criticism of classmates’ creative pieces.

 

The students will

  • Use online resources to support ongoing academic development. 

  • Discriminate in the use of source material, electronic or print. 

  • Continue to effectively use file management techniques.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in word processing and formatting of documents. 

 

The students will

  • Review guidelines concerning plagiarism;

  • Review MLA documentation techniques.

  • Incorporate research material into expository writing, balanced with student’s own conclusions and thoughts.
