Topics: Anatomy, First –Aid, Disease Prevention, Human Sexuality, Stress Management

ANATOMY COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will be able to define anatomical terminology relating to muscle movements.
  2. Identify major muscle groups of the human body.
  3. Discuss physical fitness concepts relating to specific muscle groups with the intention of preparing an individual program for each student meeting predetermined personal goals.

Anatomy Unit

    1. Terminology – medial, lateral, anterior, posterior, abduction, adduction, supination, pronation, flexion, extension, hyperextension
    2. Musles of the Lower Extremities – Sartorius, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, sartorius, gastrocnemius, guadraceps- (rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis), hamstrings - (biceps femoris, semitendinsus, semimembranosus), Achilles tendon, and tibialis anterior
    3. Muscles of the Upper Extremities – biceps, triceps, deltoid, latissimus dorsi, pectoralis major/minor, trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, internal/external obliques, rectus abdominis, intercostals, serratus anterior, brachialis
    4. Establishing an individual fitness plan for each student addressing pre-established personal goals which apply the fitness concepts discussed in class, such as, muscle tone, muscle strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and weight management.

FIRST-AID COURSE OBJECTIVES:

    1. Perform various splinting techniques for upper and lower extremities
    2. Demonstrate open, closed, and spiral bandaging techniques.
    3. Apply an arm sling and ankle wrap in an emergency situation.
    4. Perform rescue breathing and obstructed airway methods.
    5. Discuss splinting and demonstrate proper techniques to administer

First-Aid Unit:

    1. Discuss types of fractures, signs & symptoms, and treatment
    2. Using cravats and triangle bandage demonstrate lower arm splint, arm sling, upper arm splint, ankle splint ( you may need a towel), and leg splint.
    3. Using roller gauze have students practice the following bandages: open, closed, spiral, and discuss why you would use each.
    4. Rescue breathing
    5. Obstructed airway

DISEASE PREVENTION COURSE OBJECTIVES:

    1. Identify sexually transmitted diseases and discuss preventive strategies.
    2. Types of immunity
    3. Stages of infectious diseases
    4. Ways to treat and prevent infectious diseases

Disease Prevention Unit:

  1. Discuss Chlamydia, trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, genital warts, herpes, syphilis, chancroid, candidiasis, hepatitis B, pubic lice, scabies, and HIV
  2. Discuss active and passive immunity
  3. Discuss incubation, prodromal, acute, recovery and convalescence stages of diseases
  4. Discuss ways to treat disease vis diet, medial assistance, and medication. Review ways to prevent infectious disease by exercise, nutrition, vitamins, hygiene, proper sleep, de-stress, be social, vaccine, and antibiotics.

 

HUMAN SEXUALITY COURSE OBJECTIVES:

    1. Discuss abstinence/protection techniques and family planning
    2. Girls will be able to ask question or discuss internal concerns with a female gynecologist.
    3. Boys will have an opportunity to ask questions or discuss concerns with a male gynecologist.
    4. Representatives from the POE Center to discuss breast cancer, self-examination, and yearly check-ups for all females.

Human Sexuality Unit:

  1. Discuss birth control ie, diaphragm, IUD, pill, condoms, jellies, etc. Be sure to also talk about abstinence, safe sex, and family planning
  2. Guest Speaker for the Girls
  3. Guest Speaker for the Boys
  4. Poe Center representatives for the girls regarding breast cancer etc. on Oct 10th.

 

STRESS MANAGEMENT COURSE OBJECTIVES:

    1. Student will be able to identify stress
    2. Discuss how stress affects the body
    3. Students will identify ways to deal with stress and experiment with personal situations that work best.
    4. Discuss death and dying, how it can affect each of us, ways to deal with loss.

Stress Management Unit:

  1. Talk about stressor both positive and negative
  2. Stages of stress
  3. Ways to manage stress
  4. Discuss death & dying
