NUTRITION

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1.       Name and identify foods in the 4 basic food groups.

2.       Name and discuss vitamins, nutrients, and minerals

3.       Plan well balanced menus, evaluate calories, and fat content.

4.       Make good decisions regarding the purchasing of food items with consideration to nutritional value and price.

5.       Identify and discuss eating disorders, obesity, and malnutrition.

DRUGS/ALCOHOL

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1.       Identify and discuss the effects of the use of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco.

2.       Distinguish between a physical and psychological dependence.

3.       Role-play appropriate resistance techniques.

4.       Identify and discuss over the counter medicine appropriate for headaches, colds, and flu symptoms.

DISEASE TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STD)

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1.       Identify & define infectious diseases and discuss preventive strategies.

2.       Discuss pathogens - bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoan, and parasitic worms

3.       Discuss herpes, meningitis, tuberculosis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, HIV,

4.       Discuss childhood diseases – measles, mumps, chicken pox, polo

5.       Stages of infectious diseases

6.       Vaccines and other ways to treat and prevent infectious diseases

FAMILY LIFE STRUCTURE/EMOTIONAL HEALTH

OBJECTIVIES:

Students will be able to:

1.       Identify similarities and differences among the variety of families that exist today.

2.       Discuss family including responsibilities of parents and children.

3.       Identify ways to strengthen family relationships.  Discuss methods to resolve conflicts with the family structure.

4.        Define self-esteem and discuss feelings, stresses, maturity, relationships with others, and defense mechanisms.

5.       Practice communication skills that are helpful in interpersonal relationships.

6.       Discuss stress management techniques that help reduce the effects of distress and prevent mental illness and suicide.

FIRST AID

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1.       Acknowledge safety practices for the home and recreational activities.

2.       Identify natural disasters with ways to protect oneself from injury.

3.       Define accidents and discuss ways to prevent and avoid accidents and injuries

4.       Define first-aid and discuss breathing, bleeding, and poisoning, 

5.       Activate Emergency Medical System (EMS).

RESCUE BREATHING/OBSTRUCTED AIRWAY

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1.       Define and discuss the three life-threating situations:  breathing, bleeding, and poisoning.

2.       Identify breathing failures and demonstrate rescue breathing for an adult victim.

3.       Demonstrate rescue breathing for a child.

4.       Discuss choking and steps taken to treat both a conscious and unconscious victim.

5.       Demonstrate obstructed airway technique for an adult and child.
