PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE OVERVIEW:

The health/physical education curriculum is designed to provide students with current and accurate information that will facilitate healthy lifestyle decisions. Evaluation will be based on individual effort during activities.

Values of Physical Activity

Physical activity improves muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance, as well as serves as a vehicle that helps children establish self-esteem and strive for achievable, personal goals.

Program Objectives:

As a result of participating in our program students will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate safety to one-self and others at all times.
  2. Throw, catch, strike, and kick a variety of objects demonstrating both proper technique and accuracy (playground balls, Frisbees, footballs, tennis balls, etc).
  3. Perform basic locomotor skills (running, jumping, skipping, hopping, leaping) while changing directions, and during weight transfer into smooth sequences with intentional changes in direction, speed, and flow.
  4. Perform hand-eye, foot-eye, and foot-foot coordination while demonstrating ocular motor skills (tracking) by participating in a variety of daily activities.
  5. Demonstrate kinestic awareness (body in space) while performing a variety of jumping activities, agility drills, and tumbling or gymnastic skills.
  6. Participate in small group games demonstrating offensive and defensive game strategies.
  7. Discuss sport specific terminology as well as the rules and regulations for volleyball, basketball, football, soccer, track & field, softball, baseball, floor hockey, tennis, badminton, and a variety of low-level games.
  8. Practice safety to one-self and others at all times.
  9. Accept and respect the decision made by game officials, demonstrate sportsmanship, and show respect for persons of like and different skill levels.
  10. Identify proper warm-up, conditioning, and cool-down techniques and the reasons for using them.
  11. Recognize and discuss the value of physical fitness, demonstrate the ability to monitor heart rate and maintain a health enhancing level of personal physical fitness.
  12. Correctly demonstrate activities designed to improve and maintain muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and cardio-respiratory functioning.
