Good links to science as well. Presented by the Smithsonian Institution and Harvard University with Mass. Corp. for Educational Telecommunications. The television programs are excellent, but this web site doesn’t offer a lot online.
Anton Calculus Forum Web Teacher reference CC Upper A web site produced by John Wiley and Sons for use with its 5th ed. of its calculus text by Howard Anton, but a good source for any calculus teacher. Resources include a "Calculus Teacher FAQ" and a link for Math Stuff via FTP.
AP Calculus on the Web Teacher reference CCC Upper A page of textbooks and approved resources for use with "official" AP calculus. The summaries of new changes, a syllabus, and a calculator list are especially useful.

This site contains explanations of the games, but they cannot be played online. Needed materials are simple and inexpensive, like checkerboards, pads, and paper. Surprisingly, Conway’s infamous game of Life is not included on this website.

Green Issues Online activities C Both An internet project from a school in Essex, GB. Students are invited to collect their own environmental data (like the pH of their local water, etc.) and enter it into this worldwide database. Hypotheses are asked for, and results from all over the world can be viewed. As of 2/97, this site had just gotten underway, and is in need of schools to enter data. Supporting information on environmental issues is also included.

Implicate Beauty Online activities C Upper Lots of pictures of Fractals and other chaotic images to be seen, a couple of which have changeable parameters that can be plotted in real time. (None of these, however, are all that interesting. Henon Maps and Hypocycloids aren’t really "fractals" in the classical sense, and they are the only two user-definable shapes). Would be fun for some kids, but the mathematics behind some of these shapes is much too formidable for high-schoolers to attempt.

There is a searchable database of materials and internet resources, as well as links for innovations and concerns in mathematics education. Resources purport to address everything from arithmetic to college calculus and linear algebra. Weekly and monthly problems and projects can be found here.
Math in Movies WWW Links CC Both Math in the Movies is only one of the sites linked to on this page. MathSoft, producers of MathCAD, provide the links to "Cool Mathematics Sites." The Movies site gives a list of scenes in major (and not so major) motion pictures that involve mathematics.
Math Lessons Lesson Plans C Upper Two detailed lesson plans are here. One asks students to use government census figures and "blue book" values as data for a linear regression. The other is the same theme with the number of 14,000+ foot peaks and their year of first ascent as the data. Lean toward the upper school on this one.

MathMagic Online activities CC Both MathMagic is an Internet-based problem-solving arena. Students (and teachers) must go through a registration process, after which they are paired with another team of students their same age. Problems, in categories K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 are posed, and the two teams of students communicate over the internet to solve them. Email is all that is required, but a WWW version is out.

Real-world data must be gathered through the use of the computer from a variety of online sources, and statistics or generalizations are made based on the garnered information. These plans were developed by Susan Boone, a teacher working with the NSF. Good ideas here, even if they are a bit involved.
