Course Title/Code:  Mixed Media        Art 461, 462, 463

Course Description: The mixed media curriculum offers students the opportunity to research and explore a variety of artistic techniques.  Students will gain further knowledge of the artistic elements and principles through the medium of their choice.  Each student is responsible to research, plan, and execute an art project of their choosing.

Goals

Students learn to work independently in the artistic process.  With instructor guidance, students will learn how to research the media of their choice.  Skills specific to their particular media will be acquired, as well as appropriate vocabulary.  Students will plan their project while considering the elements and principles of design.  Students will gain an understanding of time management in the planning and execution of their projects.

Skills

  • Incorporate the proper use of the elements and principles of design within pieces of art
  • Acquire a greater understanding of the artist within, and how to better transmit feelings into visual images

  6. Building a jig to assure proper placement of glass
  7. Learning to tack with a soldering iron
  8. Exploring techniques of running a bead with a soldering iron
  9. Using patinas on finished pieces

Other media that are often explored in this class include:

Mosaics, silk painting, mask making, wire sculpture, book making, sewing, hemp and bead jewelry, batik, and weaving

Assessment

The diversity of projects in this class requires that the grading system be based not only on the finished product, but the artistic process as well.  Project grades are given at midterm and at the end of the trimester.  This grade reflects the craftsmanship, creativity, innovative nature, and personal challenge of the project(s) that students are producing.  In addition, studio grades are given periodically throughout the trimester.  The following criteria are used in determining studio grades:

  • A          earned by students who are consistently focused on their art, display exceptional craftsmanship and innovation, and excel at working independently at a personally challenging level
  • B          earned by students who are usually focused on their art, display good craftsmanship, and work independently most of the time
  • C          earned by students who experience difficulty remaining focused on their art, lack effort in craftsmanship, and need frequent reminders to stay on task
  • D          earned by students who rarely remain focused on their art, experience difficulty in meeting minimal craftsmanship expectations, and whose lack of ability to stay on task disturbs others
  • F          earned by students who refuse to meet minimal expectations and exhibit a total lack of effort
