Middle School Visual Art Assessment   

Artwork is graded following the project rubric, which will accompany each major assignment.  Generally, the following characteristics reflect the corresponding marks: 

A or Superior artwork usually exhibits the following:

  1. Demonstrates a high degree of thought, planning, and effort
  2. Originality, expressiveness, and imagination are clearly evident
  3. Technical use of the medium(s) is strong and there is evidence of skill in the handling of tools and materials
  4. Shows consistent and substantial attention to details
  5. Meets project criteria and is completed on time.

B or Commendable artwork usually exhibits the following:

  1. Demonstrates thought, planning and effort
  2. Shows expressiveness and is fairly confident
  3. Most technical aspects are successful and materials and/or tools are usually handled successfully
  4. Attention to detail may be a bit inconsistent, but the overall work is strong enough to merit a B
  5. Meets most, but not all of the project criteria and is turned in on time

C or Satisfactory artwork usually exhibits the following:

  1. Demonstrates good effort, but lacks thought and planning
  2. Shows little originality, expressiveness or imagination
  3. Technical us of medium and tools may be erratic, but successful enough to produce moderate results
  4. Exhibits lapses in attention to detail
  5. Some project criteria are met---If most or all criteria are met, work was probably turned in late

D or Passing artwork usually exhibits the following:

  1. Work shows very little thought, planning, or effort
  2. Solutions tend to be trite rather than original
  3. Technique and use of medium and tools is poor
  4. Shows little attention to detail
  5. Few or none of the project criteria are met

F or Failing artwork is not turned in or attempted
