Science Olympiad is a team competition, sponsored by a national organization, in which students compete in various science exploration events. Some events are individual competitions, others are partner competitions. Some events are hands-on laboratory activities, some are written tests while others are 'build it in advance' design competitions. Schools may field Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, each having up to 18 students. Regional competitions are held in the spring to determine which teams go on to compete at the State level or even National Level.
