Committee on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity - COMID

The mission of the Committee on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity (COMID) is to foster our community and environment where the richness of our diversity is recognized, respected and embraced. Our view on diversity includes, but is not limited to, ethnic, racial and linguistic heritage; religious traditions; gender; sexual orientation; age; and socioeconomic status.

COMID MEETING, Tuesday 9/20/2005

  1. Attendees introduced themselves:

    • Jason Franklin 

    • Shelton Shepherd

    • Kaja Lee                     

    • Mari Asanuma

    • Carol Hewitt    

    •  Andrea Weathers

    • Abby Weathers
       

  2. Jason Franklin expressed a goal of developing a 5-year Diversity Plan for Cary Academy.  This plan will deal primarily with educating the faculty, students, and parents.  This plan will not deal with the Human Resources piece.
     

  3. Update on the “Blue- Eyed Experiment” – 

    • Completed the BEE on all CA employees, with the last few to finish 10/21.

    • There was not enough time – many employees were dissatisfied because they wanted more time for discussions.

    • Different groups had a different set of questions that they needed to probe.  Although there were only 4 people per group, the feedback was that more time was needed to fully explore the issues.

    • To summarize, the BEE was “well-received”.
       

  4. Robert Coven is covering race as a topic in his 9th grade History classes.  Jason will follow up with Mr. Coven to see if he is willing to do a write-up summarizing how the topic went.
     

  5. A vote was taken to keep the previous meeting’s minutes as written.
     

  6. The goals of the Diversity Director were covered.

    • Develop a diversity plan by 4/15/06

    • Develop & implement diversity training

      • REACH center coming in 11/06.  BEE and REACH are mandatory training for employees

      • Future Shock – voluntary training T1

      • Gender training – voluntary training T3

      • Either Ability or Sexual Orientation T2

    • Develop a Diversity Brochure for Parents

    • Strengthen Community Building by attending 20 major school events by 6/1/06
       

  7. Mari Asanuma volunteered to be webmaster for Diversity Committee.  Carol Hewitt suggested to add ongoing Diversity activities on the website.
     

  8. Jason requested the committee to fill out an assessment on CA diversity.
